Gift For Life Foundation (GFLF) could not turn deaf ears to the cries of families during 2021 and did not just give pre packed food hampers, instead the foundation gave food vouchers, computers/ laptops/ tablets and cash to many families across Trinidad.
It must be noted that the value of each food voucher was $500.00, and 300 vouchers were distributed. In most cases, families got at least 2 vouchers. For GFLF, it was pretty clear that for children and families, the devastating impact of losing livelihoods was the bigger issue, in both children’s homes and communities throughout Trinidad.
Responding to these needs meant using every tool in GFLF’s kits. Last year, GFLF reached more than 10,000 people with food, cash and vouchers, and this year, the foundation has reached out to more children and families than we ever had before.
“Whether we’re using cash, vouchers, or food hampers, if you look for it you can find countless examples of how much this pandemic is uniting people around the world, and everywhere discussions about food vouchers, food boxes, cash assistance and logistics are being conducted” said Mrs. Sona Ragoonanan, senior member of GFLF.
COVID-19 has made a lot of things harder and more complicated and she adds “regardless of what is distributed, we should never allow our focus to be taken away from the faces of those who need food support when they fall on tough times; a hungry child, a mother unable to feed her children, a father who cannot figure out where the next meal will come from. Their voices and experiences must be heard, their rights to dignity and choice should always feature front and centre in the decision making process.”
