Gift for Life Foundation on educational tour with children – Fort George

Once again, Gift for Life Foundation (GFLF) journeyed to the west, to the hills in St. James with girls from Different Children’s Homes to get a breathtaking overview of the west of Port of Spain, the Gulf of Paria and the surroundings. Formerly called La Vigie, Fort George was part of a complex of fortifications, the building of which began in 1804 under the direction of the then British Governor, Brigadier-General Sir Thomas Hislop. The history of the site was expounded by the tour guides – Mr. Khan and Mrs. Boyce with questions and answer sessions.

Definitely a memorable one, Sunday 23rd February, 2014, GFLF members organized this educational tour with the children who enjoyed the stunning views from Fort George. The girls from the different Children’s Homes identified the Queen’s Park Savannah and the capital Port of Spain to the much sturdier fortifications at Fort Picton in Laventille, across the Caroni Bird Sanctuary and the plains of Caroni to San Fernando Hill, and the Central Range.

Far below and sweeping out to the south the children were exposed to the city suburbs of Woodbrook, St Clair, St James, Westmoorings, and the blue, sheltered and relatively hurricane-free expanse of the Gulf of Paria. They admitted that Fort George offers a commanding view both visually and defensively. To the north is the valley of Diego Martin with its strategically positioned North Post signaling station, and Petit Valley.

The panoramic view of Fort George was a first-time experience to most of the children who enjoyed the kind courtesies of Gift for Life Foundation yet again.
